So I was browsing Pinterest and I saw a bunch of plank challenges on the site and I thought to myself, if I did planks for 30-days, will it give me abs? Or at least make my core stronger? And will I be able to plank for 5 minutes?

The 30-Day Plank Challenge

Below is the challenge I followed. Day 1 started with 30 seconds and buy day 30 it ended with a 5 minute plank.

When Did I Start

I started my 30-day plank challenge on 30 April 2020 and stopped on 29 May 2020.

My Stomach Before the 30-Day Plank Challenge

My First 1 Minute Plank

After doing the plank challenge for seven days, I finally did my first 1 minute plank on the 6th of May! It was so freaking hard!Β 

Thereafter, on Day 10 of the challenge I had to do another one minute plank and honestly, it felt so much easier it’s insane. Don’t get me wrong, I was still suffering but I didn’t want to cry this time.

After two weeks I only lost 1 cm around my waist but my hips remained the same.

I thought by now I’d feel a little bit stronger but unfortunately, I don’t.

After two weeks I can just about reach a minute and 30 seconds. So far I don’t believe I will progress enough to be able to do a 5 minute plank after 30 days, but we’ll see!Β 

After 3 Weeks

So after 3 weeks of doing the plank challenge, I could hold a plank for 2 minutes! BUT, I achieved this by not remaining in the forearm plank for 2 minutes straight. Instead, I did the following:

  • Forearm plank – 30 seconds
  • Straight arm plank – 30 seconds
  • Side plank left – 15 seconds
  • Side plank right – 15 seconds
  • The last 30 seconds I alternated between the plank variations above to remain in the air until the time has passed.

If you never planked before or you don’t think planking is a workout on its own, WRONG! I was sweating so much and my heart was racing. So for a good workout, just do planks, I DARE YOU!

30-Day Plank Challenge Results

The results:

  • I lost 1 cm around my waist
  • I lost 0 cm around my hips – Although I didn’t lose centimetres around my hips, in the photos I notice a small difference. My hips look less round.
  • I can only plank for a minute (barely) and some days I could just plank for 30 seconds if I was tired.Β 

In the end, my results or the lack there of made me feel like I didn’t accomplish anything. However, I decided not to focus on my stomach’s appearance and instead decided to focus on how I felt. I felt a bit stronger in my arms after every week and when I did other core exercises they felt a tiny bit easier.

Is it Possible to Progress to a 5-Minute Plank in 30 Days?

The Verdict

In conclusion, I don’t think it’s possible to progress that quickly with planks to be able to reach 5 minutes after a month… Perhaps if you really focus on it, it might be different.Β 

Just a side note, I’m not strong in my upper body so this challenge was really hectic for me. This first week or two it felt like I was progressing in the plank but by week 3 I felt like I wasn’t getting anywhere.Β 

However, after doing this plank challenge I’m officially gatvol (for the English people read “fed up”) and I don’t want to plank again for a while. LOL This challenge really took it out of me. Some days I had to force myself to just do one 1 minute plank at least.

  1. I have recently started doing planks and I can feel it πŸ™‚ But I only do it 3 sets of 20 sec each at a time. I do this 2-4 times a day and I think it is working great. I am not sure if 5 min plank is do-able πŸ™ˆπŸ™ˆ loved your results.

  2. You look so good though! You can honestly notice the difference! You did a great job! Me and my fiancΓ© just started doing planks last week and we can both feel the difference and tell the difference. I think this is something we will be doing every night before bed.
